Anti-Semitic Incidents Rise to Record
Britain has seen an unprecedented number of anti-Semitic "hate crimes," with more incidents recorded so far in 2009 than in any previous entire year, a Jewish advisory body said. Up to end-June, there were 609 anti-Semitic incidents ranging from verbal abuse to extreme violence, compared with 276 in the same period last year. The Community Security Trust (CST), which advises Britain's estimated 300,000 Jews on safety issues, said it was the highest number it had recorded since it began collating figures in 1984.

Torah Online Devarim
This Shabbat we read the first Torah Portion in the book of Devarim (Deuteronomy). This fifth and last book of the Five Books of Moses is different than the previous four; it is G-d's directions to a generation that was about to enter the Land of Israel and, for the most part, had not experienced the 'Face to Face' (Deut. 5:4) revelation of G-d at Mount Sinai; they were LOWER than the previous generation.

Politicians, Rabbis Arrested in Sweep
Dozens of arrests have taken place across New Jersey this morning and many public officials -- including the mayors of Hoboken and Secaucus, the deputy mayor of Jersey City -- are among those being taken into custody. FBI and IRS agents are making the roundups all across the state in what is being described as one of the biggest investigations of its kind in Jersey's scandal-plagued history.

Jewish PM: "I pray at chabad"
Czech Prime Minister Jan Fischer has just concluded a visit to Israel. "It is not easy being a Jewish Prime Minster in a country that is not Jewish, but I am proud to be a son to the Jewish nation," Fischer said during the visit. While visiting the Kotel with Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitz, Fischer shed a tear and prayed. The Czech head of state is a member of the Jewish community in Prague and said the he prays at the Chabad House synagogue, a press release said.

Beis Habchira Classes for Women
For the duration of the three weeks, a series of classes on the laws of the Beis Hamikdosh are being held in 770 for Crown Heights women. Classes are taught by Rabbis Shmuel Bluming, Avraham Bluming, Nachman Schapiro and Yonasan Johnson. The classes are hosted by Beis Midrash L'Nashim, which holds classes every day between 10 am - 3 pm and in the evenings. On Tisha B'Av a Siyum on the Hilchos Beis Habichira will be held after 1 pm.

Rabbis Not Surrendering to Court's Ruling
An anti-missionary groups revelation that an Ashdod bakery owner was actively involved in missionary activity prompted the local rabbinate to pull the establishments kashrut certificate. A subsequent High Court ruling demanding that the kashrut certificate be reinstated was rebuffed by rabbis. Three weeks ago, a panel of three High Court judges decided in favor of a motion by Penina Comforti, a messianic Jew and active missionary, and ruled that the Chief Rabbinate and the Rabbi of Ashdod must rescind their refusal to grant kashrut certification to the 'Penina' pie bakery that she owns.

Rabbis touring Montana Hit Front Page News

The following article appeared on the front page of the Billings Gazette.

For the past three weeks, Leibel Kahanov and Ephraim Zimmerman have traveled throughout Montana, encouraging other Jews in their faith. The two young men are not hard to spot. They wear identical black pants and white dress shirts, yarmulkes - or skullcaps - on their heads and long, curly, dark-brown beards. Kahanov, 22, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Zimmerman, 23, of Chicago, are members of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, one branch of Orthodox Judaism, which has its headquarters in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Both are rabbis who study at Yeshiva University in New York.

Trial continues, despite plea
The trial of the only surviving gunman from last year's Mumbai attacks will continue, despite his unexpected confession. Mohammad Ajmal Kasab, a 21-year-old Pakistani citizen, on Monday confessed in open court during routine interviewing of witnesses. The confession had come as a surprise as Kasab in May pleases not guilty to involvement in the November attacks, which left 166 people dead. Among the victims were  Chabad Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife, Rivka, as well as three other Jewish victims.

Shluchim Humiliated at Airport
Shluchim to Paris Rabbi Michael and Dvora Sitbon flew with their four children from France to Israel. During their layover in Germany, they claim they were subjected to degrading and racist treatment by one of the German border officers. Once the border officer saw 26-year-old Dvora's Israeli passport, he spat on it and made a gesture with his hands as if he were trying to shoot her, the Sitbon couple told French-Jewish radio station Radio Shalom.

School through the summer, and lovin it!
As most Crown Heights children are enjoying the peak of their summer vacation at the different of camps around the country, students at Cheder Ohr Menachem continue to study through the summer break. For this past month the students have had a full school schedule until early afternoon, after which they enjoyed a full camp program complete with trips, sports, swimming and great activities. Our photographer spent some time at the school today and brought back the following photos.

Imprisoned Bachur May be Coming to Israel
Chabad Rabbi, HaRav Yitzchak Dovid Grossman Shlita, Chief Rabbi of Migdal Haemek, was interviewed on Wednesday night by Kol Chai Radio. Following are the highlights of the interview. Rav Grossman met with Justice Minister Prof. Yaakov Neeman about two months ago, as well as meeting with Public Security Minister Aharonovitch. The Rav stated both did a great deal towards arranging the imminent release and Minister Neeman did sign the necessary forms, but usually the process takes a long time but it appears they expedited the process.

If you regularly run laps around Brooklyns Prospect Park on Sunday mornings, or Thursday evenings, you might pass a pack of bearded men, with one striding confidently in front. This is Chaim Backman, the leader of the TriChai Triathlon Club, the first triathlon group geared specifically to Orthodox Jews. Backman, a Lubavitcher who works as a physical therapist, is a longtime runner who has completed the New York City marathon, but never used to bike or swim, the other elements making up the grueling triathlon.

Former hospital to become chabad school
Maple Leaf's former Waldo Hospital will become a private elementary school, according to Camp Fire USA Central Puget Sound Council. Camp Fire sold the building and 1.6-acre site, at 8511 15th Ave. N.E., to Menachem Mendel Seattle Cheder for $3.425 million on July 16, according to King County records.

Bar Mitzvah at the Age of 90
Omaha, Nebraskan Elliot (Bus) Rubin, at the age of 90, carried out a dream to conduct the Bar mitzvah ceremony that he missed while he was a teenager. A Chabad-Lubvitch family in Omaha guided Rubin on the road back to Judaism, and a community member coached him to learn enough Hebrew to recite the blessing in an emotional ceremony.

Mumbai Terorrist suspect 'ready to die'
The alleged gunman captured alive during last year's Mumbai terror attacks told an Indian court Wednesday that he was ready to face execution. But prosecutors who are trying Mohammed Ajmal Kasab on 86 charges -- including waging war against India -- said they will hold off on recommending a sentence because Kasab has yet to disclose more. Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said Kasab had downplayed his alleged role in the Mumbai attacks to a minimum.

Siyum Meseches in 770
As per the Rebbe's instructions, every night during the nine days a Siyum Masechta will take place in 770, Chabad Lubavitch Headquarters, followed by a L'Chaim and some light refreshments. Last night, many members of Anash participated in the Siyum which was given over by Rabbi Eliezer Halen, of Crown Heights.

Swine Flu in Kfar Chabad?
Has the swine flu spread to Kfar Chabad? The Cheder Yiddish in Kfar Chabad noted a large number of absentees in two classes, after many children complained of feeling unwell with symptoms resembling the Mexican Flu. The students will undergo medical exams to establish whether the children have contracted the flu or not. The school administration has informed Chabad.info they are closely monitoring the situation and are working with local health professionals.

Orlando welcomes its newest Chabad center!
In Orlando, there are shluchim: The Chabad of Greater Orlando in Maitland, the Chabad of South Orlando near Universal Studios, and the Chabad at UCF in Oviedo. Well now the greater Orlando area can count itself even luckier as we welcome our fourth Chabad center! Chabad of North Orlando is settling into Sanford, FL to provide the northeast corner of the Orlando Metro area with another center for Jewish learning and living. Rabbi Yanky Majesky and his wife, Chanshy, as well as their daughter Chayale, have just moved from Brooklyn, NY to lay the groundwork for a vibrant Jewish community in North Orlando.
